The most expensive doggy treats in the world are on Italian soil. Talented canines spend four years learning to sniff out white truffles ($1,200 to $2,300 per pound), which grow around the roots of oak and hazelnut trees. Rivalry for truffles is fierce; each year a few dogs are poisoned by strychninelaced sausages left in the woods by unsportsmanlike hunters.
