Vibrant Milan is the birthplace of modern Italian style. Here, Prada introduced its shoes and trunks, Giorgio Armani deconstructed the suit and Dolce & Gabbana took corsets out of the closet. But for personal shopper Simona Iulini-Levi, Milan offers much more than fashion. “If you do it right,” she says, sipping a morning cappuccino, “time spent in the fashion capital can be a lesson in gracious Italian living.”
On a recent bright, clear day, bene happily accompanied Simona and her good friend Federico on a shopping excursion. We begin in the heart of Milan’s shopping district, the Quadrilatero d’Oro (“Golden Rectangle”). Although the area is home base for the premier fashion houses, it's also peppered with exclusive boutiques that confirm Milan's reputation as the fashion capital of Italy.
Everyone rushes around us as we stroll down Via della Spiga, but there's no reason to race through a shopping trip, explains Simona, deftly dodging a delivery truck. "I recommend planning two half-days, rather than one day-long marathon," she says. "Shopping should never be an exhausting trek; it should be a delight."
